Screen House /
Adapt & Renovate, Residential
Screen House is a compact double storey addition at the rear of an Edwardian terrace house in Kensington. It demonstrates the benefits of efficient spatial planning to maximise the use of a tight, inner-city site to best accommodate the changing needs of a family. The project also included the transition to all-electric building services and a highly efficient building envelope to improve the environmental performance of the house.
The project has a simple rectangular form and is predominantly clad in salvaged red brick that was cleaned and re-laid on site. A feature screen from full-height timber fins encloses the first floor balcony. This singular element forms a full-height balustrade, sun shading to control the western sun and screening to control overlooking of neighbouring properties.
